Academic Coaching

What Is Academic Coaching?

Academic coaching is a structured, student-centered support service that goes beyond tutoring. Where tutoring focuses on content, academic coaching focuses on the student - helping them develop the skills, habits, and mindset needed to succeed independently across all subjects.

AAIC's academic coaches work one-on-one and in small groups with students to build executive functioning skills including organization, time management, goal-setting, self-monitoring, and academic resilience.

This is not remediation. This is empowerment - helping students understand how they learn best and equipping them with the tools to show up consistently for their own education.

Our Approach

1

Student Assessment & Goal Setting

Each student begins with a structured intake that identifies learning strengths, challenges, and goals. Coaches and students co-create a personalized coaching plan.

2

One-on-One & Small Group Sessions

Coaches meet regularly with students in school - working on organization systems, assignment planning, study strategies, and self-regulation techniques.

3

Executive Functioning Development

Sessions focus on core EF skills: task initiation, planning, working memory, flexible thinking, and emotional regulation in academic contexts.

4

Teacher & Family Collaboration

Coaches communicate with classroom teachers and families to ensure strategies are reinforced at home and aligned with classroom expectations.

5

Progress Monitoring

Student progress is tracked against coaching goals using observable data - assignment completion, grades, self-reported confidence, and teacher feedback.

6

Adaptive Coaching Plans

Coaching plans are reviewed and adjusted regularly based on student progress and evolving school priorities.

Common Questions

What grade levels does academic coaching serve?

AAIC's academic coaching program serves students in grades K-12 in nonpublic, charter, and faith-based schools. Coaching approaches are developmentally appropriate for each grade band.

Is academic coaching the same as tutoring?

No. Tutoring focuses on content mastery - helping students understand specific subjects. Academic coaching focuses on the student as a learner, building the habits, strategies, and executive functioning skills that support success across all subjects.

Can academic coaching be funded through Title I or Title II?

Yes. Academic coaching services for eligible students can be funded through Title I equitable services. Coaching for professional educator development may qualify under Title II. AAIC provides complete documentation to support compliance.

How often do coaching sessions occur?

Session frequency is customized to each school's schedule and student needs - typically one to three times per week per student. AAIC works with school leadership to determine the optimal schedule.

How do you measure the impact of academic coaching?

AAIC tracks progress using a combination of academic data (grades, iReady scores, assignment completion), teacher observation, and student self-assessment. Progress reports are shared regularly with school leadership.

What does an academic coach do differently from a classroom teacher?

Academic coaches have dedicated time to focus on each student as an individual - building a trusting relationship and working on skills that classroom teachers rarely have time to address directly. They serve as a bridge between the student, the classroom, and the family.
